Helix Laser Skin Resurfacing
Years of Florida sun, the slow loss of collagen that comes with age, and the marks left behind by acne all show up in the same place: the surface of your skin. Helix laser skin resurfacing is one of the most versatile tools our team uses to address them.
Helix is an advanced fractional CO2 laser platform offered at Sarasota Plastic Surgery Center. It is designed to improve skin tone and texture and soften the appearance of fine lines, sun damage, and scarring. What sets it apart from a single-setting laser is how adjustable it is. Your provider can dial the treatment up or down based on what your skin needs and how much recovery time you can realistically build into your schedule, from a light polish before a weekend event to a more intensive session aimed at deeper texture concerns.
Every Helix treatment at our practice begins with a consultation and a skin evaluation, so the plan you leave with is built around your goals rather than a one-size-fits-all protocol.
What Is the Helix Laser?
Helix is a fractional CO2 skin resurfacing platform manufactured by DEKA, an Italian laser company, and distributed in the United States by Cartessa Aesthetics. It pairs a 10,600 nm ablative CO2 laser with a 1570 nm non-ablative fiber laser in a single system, which allows a provider to use either energy on its own or blend the two in one session.
The feature that makes Helix distinctive is its pulse control. DEKA’s Pulse Shape Design technology gives providers precise command over the duration, energy, and shape of each laser pulse. One of those pulse modes, called H-Pulse, delivers very high peak power in an extremely short burst. Because the energy is delivered and gone so quickly, it can resurface the outer layer of skin while limiting the amount of heat that spreads into surrounding tissue. This is the technology behind the CoolPeel treatment.
That level of control is what allows one device to cover such a wide range of treatments, from gentle surface refinement to more substantial resurfacing.
How Helix Treatment Works
Fractional laser treatment doesn’t treat your entire skin surface at once. Instead, the laser delivers energy in a precise grid pattern, creating tiny columns of treated tissue called micro-treatment zones while leaving the skin between them untouched.
Those small treated columns trigger your body’s natural wound-healing response. As the skin repairs itself, it produces new collagen and elastin, the structural proteins that give skin its firmness and smoothness. The untreated tissue surrounding each column acts as a reservoir of healthy cells that speeds the healing process along, which is why fractional treatments generally recover faster than older, fully ablative resurfacing methods.
The visible change happens gradually. Surface texture and tone often look fresher within the first couple of weeks, while the collagen remodeling underneath continues for several months after treatment.
CoolPeel vs. Fusion: Two Ways to Treat
Helix offers more than one branded treatment protocol. The two most patients ask about are CoolPeel and Fusion, and the difference between them comes down to depth and recovery time.
CoolPeel is the lighter option. It uses the H-Pulse mode to treat the superficial layer of the skin quickly, with minimal heat spreading into surrounding tissue. It is a good fit for patients focused on overall skin quality: dullness, rough texture, early fine lines, enlarged-looking pores, and mild sun damage. Recovery is short, and many patients describe it as feeling and looking like a mild sunburn for a day or so. Because of that, CoolPeel is often chosen by patients who cannot take meaningful time away from work or social plans, and it is well suited to a series of sessions spaced out over time.
Fusion is the more comprehensive option. Exclusive to the Helix platform, Fusion combines ablative CO2 energy with the non-ablative 1570 nm wavelength in a single session, pairing controlled surface resurfacing with deeper heating below. That combination allows it to address concerns that a surface treatment alone will not reach, such as more visible acne or surgical scarring, deeper lines, and skin laxity. Because more tissue is treated, Fusion involves a longer recovery than CoolPeel, typically several days of redness, swelling, and flaking.
Neither option is better than the other in the abstract. They solve different problems. During your consultation, your provider will look at your skin, listen to your goals, and talk through what your schedule can accommodate before recommending an approach.

Treatment Areas and Concerns
Skin does not stop at the jawline, and neither does Helix. At our Sarasota office, Helix may be used to treat the face, neck, décolletage, and the backs of the hands. These areas often show sun exposure earlier and more visibly than the face itself, particularly in a climate like ours, and treating them together helps keep results looking consistent.
Concerns patients commonly bring to us for Helix include:
- Fine lines and early wrinkling
- Rough or uneven skin texture
- Enlarged-looking pores
- Sun damage and uneven pigmentation
- Acne scarring and other textural scarring
- General dullness and loss of skin clarity
Whether Helix is the right tool for your particular concern is a question best answered in person. Some concerns respond better to a different treatment, and we will tell you if that is the case.
What to Expect During Your Treatment
Consultation and skin evaluation. Your provider reviews your medical history, current skincare and medications, sun exposure habits, and aesthetic goals, then examines your skin to determine whether Helix is appropriate and which settings make sense.
Preparation. On the day of treatment, the area is thoroughly cleansed. A topical numbing cream is applied and left in place for roughly 30 to 45 minutes so the treatment is comfortable. Protective eyewear is worn throughout.
The treatment. Your provider passes the Helix handpiece over the treatment area in sections. Most patients describe the sensation as a series of warm, prickly snaps, with cool air blowing across the skin to help with comfort.
Treatment time. A lighter full-face CoolPeel treatment is quick, often finishing in well under half an hour of actual laser time. More intensive treatments and larger or multiple areas take longer. Including numbing time, plan on being in the office for one to two hours.
Aftercare. You will leave with written, personalized aftercare instructions covering cleansing, moisturizing, sun protection, and what to avoid while your skin heals, along with a point of contact if you have questions during recovery.
Downtime and Recovery
How much downtime to expect depends directly on how intensive your treatment was.
After a lighter treatment, most patients have redness and a warm, tight feeling similar to a mild sunburn for about one to two days, sometimes with light flaking as the skin turns over. Many people return to normal activities right away and cover any residual pink with makeup after the first day, once cleared by their provider.
After a deeper treatment, expect more. Redness and swelling are typical for the first several days, followed by noticeable dryness, roughness, and flaking as the treated surface sheds and new skin comes through. Most patients plan for several days of social downtime, with some residual pinkness fading over the following weeks.
Regardless of intensity, diligent sun protection during healing is not optional. Freshly treated skin is highly vulnerable to UV exposure, and in Sarasota that means daily broad-spectrum sunscreen, a hat, and shade while your skin recovers.
Results and Your Treatment Plan
Helix results are not immediate, and that is by design. The improvement comes from your own collagen remodeling, which takes time. Most patients notice smoother texture and brighter tone within the first two to four weeks, with continued refinement over the following three to six months as new collagen matures.
Some patients achieve what they are after with a single, more intensive session. Others do better with a series of lighter treatments spaced several weeks apart, which spreads the recovery out into manageable pieces. Your provider will recommend a plan at your consultation and adjust it as your skin responds.
Results are not permanent. Aging and sun exposure continue, so periodic maintenance treatments and a consistent home skincare and sun protection routine will help preserve what you have gained.
Candidates and Safety
Good candidates for Helix are generally healthy adults bothered by texture, tone, sun damage, fine lines, or scarring, who understand that results develop over time and are willing to commit to sun protection afterward. Candidacy is always determined during an in-person consultation with one of our providers.
Fractional CO2 laser treatment may not be appropriate, or may need to be postponed, if you:
- Have an active skin infection, cold sore outbreak, or active acne breakout in the treatment area
- Have recently taken isotretinoin, or are taking medications that increase light sensitivity
- Are pregnant or nursing
- Have a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring
- Have had significant recent sun exposure or a tan in the treatment area
- Have certain autoimmune conditions or healing disorders
Skin tone also factors into planning. Patients with deeper skin tones can be treated with laser resurfacing, but settings must be selected carefully to reduce the risk of pigment changes, and in some cases a different treatment is the safer recommendation. Be candid about your full medical history and medications at your consultation. It directly affects both your safety and your result.
How Helix Fits Alongside Our Other Skin Treatments
Helix does not replace what we already offer. It expands it. If you are researching options, it helps to see where each one sits:
- Laser Resurfacing covers our overall approach to ablative and non-ablative laser treatment of the face.
- Erbium 1540 Skin Resurfacing is a non-ablative option that works below the surface without removing the outer skin layer, generally with a gentler recovery.
- Microneedling stimulates collagen mechanically rather than with light energy, and is often a good entry point for texture and scarring.
- Chemical Peels use topical solutions to exfoliate the surface and are frequently used for tone, congestion, and pigment.
- IPL Photo Rejuvenation targets color concerns such as brown spots and redness rather than texture.
Many patients end up combining approaches over time. Your provider can help you sequence them sensibly.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Helix laser and how is it different from other laser treatments?
Helix is a fractional CO2 resurfacing platform by DEKA, distributed by Cartessa Aesthetics. Its main difference is versatility. It combines an ablative CO2 laser with a non-ablative 1570 nm fiber laser and offers precise pulse control, so a provider can deliver anything from a light surface treatment to a deeper combination treatment on the same device. Most lasers are built for a narrower range.
Does Helix laser treatment hurt?
A topical numbing cream is applied before treatment, and cool air is used during it. Most patients describe the sensation as warm, prickly snapping rather than sharp pain, and rate it as very manageable. Deeper settings feel more intense than lighter ones. Afterward, the skin usually feels hot and tight, similar to a sunburn, for several hours.
How much downtime should I expect?
It depends on intensity. Lighter treatments typically mean one to two days of redness and mild flaking. Deeper treatments typically mean several days of redness, swelling, and peeling, with residual pinkness fading over a few weeks. Your provider will give you a realistic estimate for your specific plan before you book.
How many treatments will I need?
There is no universal answer. Some patients get what they want from one deeper session. Others do a series of three or more lighter sessions spaced several weeks apart. Scarring and more advanced sun damage generally require more sessions than surface-level texture and tone concerns.
When will I see results?
Initial improvement in tone and texture is usually visible within two to four weeks, once healing is complete. Because the treatment works by stimulating new collagen, results continue to refine for roughly three to six months afterward.
Is Helix laser safe for all skin types?
Laser resurfacing can be performed on a wide range of skin tones, but deeper skin tones carry a higher risk of post-treatment pigment changes and require more conservative settings and careful pre-treatment planning. In some cases, a provider may recommend a different treatment as the safer choice. This is determined during your consultation.
Can Helix treat acne scars?
Improving the appearance of acne scarring is one of the more common reasons patients pursue fractional CO2 resurfacing. Deeper, combination treatments generally do more for textural scarring than light surface treatments, and a series is often recommended. Realistic expectations matter here: the goal is meaningful softening of scar texture, not complete erasure.
How does Helix compare to Erbium 1540 or IPL treatments?
They target different things. Our Erbium 1540 treatment is non-ablative, working beneath the surface without removing the outer skin layer, which usually means a gentler recovery and a more gradual result. IPL is not a resurfacing treatment at all. It targets color, such as brown spots and redness, and does little for texture. Helix, as an ablative CO2 platform, resurfaces the skin’s surface directly and offers the broadest range of intensity. Your provider will recommend based on your concern, your skin, and your tolerance for downtime.
How should I prepare for treatment?
Avoid sun exposure and self-tanner in the treatment area for several weeks beforehand, since treating recently tanned skin raises the risk of pigment problems. Stop retinoids and exfoliating acids for about a week prior. Tell your provider about all medications and supplements. If you have a history of cold sores, you may be prescribed an antiviral to take before treatment. Come to your appointment with clean skin and no makeup.
What should I avoid after treatment?
Avoid direct sun and wear broad-spectrum sunscreen every day once your provider clears you to apply it. Skip retinoids, acids, scrubs, and any active skincare until your skin has fully healed. Avoid heavy exercise, hot showers, saunas, pools, and the Gulf for the first several days. Do not pick or peel flaking skin, which can lead to scarring or pigment changes. Follow the written aftercare instructions you are given, and call us if anything looks or feels wrong.
