Chemical Peel

Chemical Peel in Sarasota, Florida

Chemical peels are a safe and effective way to treat skin irregularities by removing the top layer of skin with a chemical solution to reveal a new, fresh layer and promote new skin tissue growth. These smoothing peels are performed as part of a periodic, customizable skincare program at our Sarasota Plastic Surgery MedSpa.

We are proud to offer a variety of SkinMedica® Chemical Peels. There are different degrees of peels, ranging from mild to medium, that can be used depending on the patient’s cosmetic goals and their skin condition prior to treatment. Our chemical peels can improve rough texture, age spots, fine lines, pigmentation, acne scars, and uneven skin tone, and provide a glowing complexion. SkinMedica peels are recommended to be done in a series of 3 at 4 week intervals to achieve optimal results.

Your Guide to Chemical Peels

What are Chemical Peels?

A chemical peel is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments used to improve the overall appearance and health of the skin. During this outpatient procedure, a carefully formulated chemical solution is applied to the treatment area to create a controlled exfoliation of the outer layer of skin. This process creates a mild, controlled injury that encourages the body to shed damaged skin cells and stimulate the growth of new skin.

As the skin heals, the treated skin gradually peels away, revealing smoother, brighter skin beneath. This facial peel can improve skin texture, reduce uneven skin tone, and soften visible lines and wrinkles. Chemical peels are commonly used to treat a variety of skin conditions, including acne, acne scars, sun damage, and age spots.

Types of Chemical Peels

There are various types of chemical peels that can treat the skin at different depths. Peels involve the use of a special chemical solution, which may be made up of different levels of skin-safe acids. These aids may include lactic acid, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, beta hydroxy acid, and more.

Superficial Chemical Peels

Superficial peels, also known as light peels, are treatments to remove the outermost layer of the skin, known as the epidermis. Light peels are often done in a series and can be repeated every two to five weeks. They use milder chemicals than deeper peels, such as alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), including glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid, and maleic acid.

Medium Chemical Peels

A medium chemical peel is a minimally invasive procedure that removes skin cells from the epidermis and the upper part of the dermis, the middle layer of skin. Medium chemical peels are usually performed using trichloroacetic acid (TCA) at concentrations between 35% and 50%. The procedure can cause minor burning or stinging, but the discomfort should subside within 30 minutes to an hour. Recovery from the peel can take a week or more.

Deep Chemical Peels

A deep chemical peel removes damaged layers of skin using a chemical solution. The solution penetrates deeper than other peels, reaching the lower middle layer of the skin. This can help reduce the appearance of deep wrinkles, scars, sun damage, and other skin concerns.

Deep chemical peels can cause side effects like redness, scabbing, and swelling. The redness may last for a few months after the procedure. Deep peels also have a longer recovery time than other types of peels.

Our SkinMedica® Peels

We offer SkinMedica® Chemical Peels, which are suitable for all skin types. These peels address visible signs of mild to moderate skin imperfections, including the appearance of sun damage, fine lines and wrinkles, acne scarring, and melasma.

Peels address many skin concerns. Two common issues are poor cell turnover that dulls the skin and problematic skin, specifically acne. Each problem has its own solution. Our SkinMedica® blended acid peels combine multiple ingredients, such as alpha hydroxyl, beta hydroxy, and retinoic acids, and can safely treat several concerns at once.  These all-inclusive peels treat mild to severe skin imperfections, smooth fine lines and wrinkles, and improve texture. They are also self-neutralizing, increasing safety and tolerability on the skin. The patient normally peels 48 hours after the procedure, and the skin shedding lasts for 3-4 days. Patients see noticeable results after just one peel and compelling results after several peels.

Once you decide you want a chemical peel, our team will guide you in deciding which peel is best for you.

SkinMedica® Rejuvinize Peel®

The Rejuvenize Peel® helps provide vibrant, radiant-looking skin with minimal downtime. It aims to smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Patients can see noticeable improvement after just one peel and compelling results after three to six peels.

What Skin Concerns Can Chemical Peels Address?

Chemical peels are highly versatile treatments that can address a wide range of cosmetic and medical skin conditions. By removing damaged skin layers and encouraging the formation of new skin, a chemical peel can significantly improve the tone, texture, and clarity of the complexion.

Chemical peels are also commonly used to treat:

  • Acne and persistent breakouts
  • Acne scars and deep scars
  • Sun damage and discoloration caused by sun exposure
  • Age spots and changes in skin color
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
  • Actinic keratosis and other precancerous growths

Who is a Candidate for Chemical Peels?

Because there are several types of chemical peels, treatment can often be customized for different skin types and concerns. Light chemical peels are often appropriate for patients looking to gently refresh their skin with little to no downtime, while medium peels or a medium chemical peel may be recommended for individuals with more noticeable moderate lines or discoloration.

A deep chemical peel or deep peel may be suggested in certain cases when deeper wrinkles or deep scars are present and a more significant correction is desired. During your consultation, our plastic surgeons will review your skin conditions, medical history, and family history to determine the most appropriate peel type.

What To Expect During and After a Chemical Peel?

The chemical application for a peel follows similar steps. The only difference will be the type of acid solution used, the amount applied, and the period of time that it is left on the skin.  Downtime depends on what kind of peel is done. There is no downtime for mild peels, but for medium peels, the patient will be in a healing process for up to 7 days. After the treatment, it is important that the patient allow the peeling process to occur naturally and not assist in peeling or pulling at the skin. It is also extremely important to avoid sun exposure for a period of time after the treatment.
