Microneedling

Microneedling in Sarasota, Florida

Sarasota Plastic Surgery Center creates gorgeous complexions with SkinPen, an FDA-cleared microneedling treatment device.  SkinPen is a medical device on the market that has been studied, cleared, and approved by the FDA for the treatment of adult facial acne scars (atrophic acne scars) and surgical scars. However, SkinPen works on more than just scars. Patients see significant improvement in overall skin tone and skin texture with the reduction of fine lines and discoloration as well. This procedure is minimally invasive and is used to improve surface irregularities such as skin texture, tone, and firmness.

What is Microneedling (Collagen Induction Therapy)?

Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy, is a cosmetic procedure that uses fine needles to create tiny punctures in the skin, triggering its natural healing response. This stimulates collagen production to reduce scars, wrinkles, and improve texture for smoother, firmer skin with minimal downtime. It also works on many different skin types and skin tones, including darker skin tones.

If you’re looking for a more youthful appearance and smoother skin, this is likely the perfect solution.

Microneedling can often be combined with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for an even more effective skin rejuvenation.

What Areas Can Be Treated?

Microneedling can be used on many different areas of the face and body. It’s highly effective on the skin of the face, neck, and chest, but can also work well on the arms and legs, hands, back, and abdomen. Where our med spa team will use our microneedling device will depend on where your skin concerns are.

How is Microneedling Performed?

SkinPen is a microneedling device that uses a sterile tip containing 12 pinpoint needles to make small, controlled, minuscule, evenly spaced punctures into the skin. The small wounds created by the tiny needles will sometimes cause pinpricks of blood to rise to the surface and then induce a wound-healing response in the body. The skin’s healing process prompts the production of collagen and elastin, leading to overall improvement in skin elasticity and appearance. Your body rushes in to patch up the injury by growing fresh new collagen and elastin, which gives skin more strength and resiliency. By continuing to simulate collagen production over multiple treatments, the end result is that patients will see fine lines and wrinkles disappear, enhanced improvement in skin tone and texture, and even minimize enlarged pores and acne scars. The bottom line is, as we age, we lose collagen (1% per year, to be exact), and coupled with genetic changes and sun exposure, this leads to wrinkles. If we can stimulate collagen production, we can fight off wrinkles and keep our skin firm, plump, and elastic, to create what Skin Pen patients refer to as an “overall youthful glow.”

What Skin Concerns Can the Microneedling Procedure Address?

With the SkinPen microneedling device, skin conditions such as the following can effectively be treated or reduced in appearance:

  • Aging skin
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Stretch marks
  • Skin scars
  • Acne scarring
  • Dark spots

How Many Microneedling Treatments are Needed?

For most of our patients, three to six microneedling sessions are needed to achieve optimal results. With that said, everyone’s skin is different, and how they respond to the microneedling treatment may differ as well. During the consultation process, our team will give you a detailed treatment plan based on your unique skin concerns.

Results and Recovery

There is very little downtime with microneedling. Most patients can typically get back to their daily routine immediately. That said, you will want to avoid excess sun exposure, alcohol use, and harsh skincare productions. You’ll also want to avoid sweating or intense heat for 24 to 48 hours.

As for results, you may see some improvements immediately, but it can take several weeks (and multiple treatments) before you see the full results. It typically takes 4-6 weeks.
