Arm Lift

Brachioplasty in Sarasota

As the body experiences weight fluctuations, the skin relaxes, and fatty tissue is deposited in various areas. These problem areas can be difficult to manage even through proper diet and exercise. It is common for the upper arm to develop loose skin and fat, which can cause embarrassment and restrict clothing choices. Brachioplasty, often called an arm lift, at Sarasota Plastic Surgery Center is a body-contouring procedure that removes excess skin and fatty tissue from the upper arms, dramatically improving the appearance and silhouette of the arms. Brachioplasty is a popular cosmetic surgery. However, many patients worry about the visible scar it can leave behind. Our Sarasota surgeons use the embrace® Advanced Scar Therapy starting 2 weeks after surgery to help heal and lighten scarring, making it less noticeable. The embrace system has been clinically proven to produce finer, lighter scars that heal faster.  After the scar heals, all anyone will notice is sleek, contoured arms.

What is an Arm Lift?

An arm lift, also known as a brachioplasty, is designed to reshape and contour the upper arms by removing excess skin and fat that can result from significant weight loss, aging, or genetic factors. Over time, the skin can lose its elasticity, leading to sagging and loose skin that diet and exercise alone cannot correct.

During the arm lift surgery, your plastic surgeon creates an incision along the underside of the arm, typically extending from the armpit to the elbow, depending on the amount of excess tissue to be removed. Once the excess skin and fat are carefully excised, the remaining skin is tightened to create a smoother, more toned contour.

What Are the Benefits of an Arm Lift?

By removing excess skin and fatty tissue, the arm lift procedure enhances the shape and tone of the arms, helping clothing fit more comfortably and restoring confidence in your appearance. Patients often find they can enjoy sleeveless styles again without self-consciousness.

In addition to improved contour, the procedure can relieve the physical discomfort sometimes caused by hanging skin that rubs or chafes against the body. For many patients, the results are long-lasting, especially when they maintain a stable weight, a healthy diet, and a regular exercise routine.

How is an Arm Lift Performed?

The goal of an arm lift is to result in a toned upper arm appearance. The length of the incision varies depending on how much skin and fat are to be removed. Patients who have a fairly good skin tone may only require a minor incision. However, patients with excessively loose, hanging skin may require an incision that runs from the armpit to the elbow. At this time, the excess skin is trimmed, and the underlying muscles are tightened. In some patients, the armpit will also need to be addressed and surgically tightened.

What Can I Expect During and After Arm Lift Surgery?

Patients undergoing brachioplasty are put under general anesthesia. It is an outpatient procedure that typically takes 2 hours to complete. If the procedure is a part of an after-weight-loss surgery, which usually involves more than one body part, an overnight stay may be required. After surgery, the arm is protected with a compression garment and drain tubes may be in place to reduce the risk of infection. Swelling and bruising are normal. Patients should keep the arm elevated to promote blood circulation and help with swelling. With proper care, the arm will return to normal function after several weeks.

Who is a Candidate For Brachioplasty Procedures?

Ideal candidates for arm lift surgery are individuals in good health who struggle with excess skin and fat on the upper arms that have not responded to diet or exercise. Patients who have experienced significant weight loss or notice sagging skin due to aging often benefit most from this surgical procedure. However, candidates need to maintain a healthy, stable weight, as future weight fluctuations can affect the outcome.

Candidates should also have adequate skin elasticity and be free from any medical conditions that could increase the risk of infection, bleeding, or delayed healing. During your consultation, our team will review your medical history, evaluate the degree of loose skin, and discuss your goals to determine the most effective treatment plan.
