Venice has no shortage of beaches, but abdominal muscles that separated during pregnancy, or skin left loose after a major weight loss, will not tighten on a walk along Caspersen. For many women and men in Venice, South Venice, Nokomis and Osprey, the answer is a tummy tuck, and the drive north to Sarasota Plastic Surgery Center is shorter than most expect. This guide covers how the surgery is tailored, what surgery day looks like at our on-site surgical center, and how to plan a recovery that starts in Sarasota and finishes at home in Venice.
If you are still deciding between procedures, our tummy tuck and mini tummy tuck page explains each version in detail, and our overview of plastic surgery for Venice patients covers the other options neighbors ask about most.
Full, Mini or Extended: Matching the Incision to Your Abdomen
An abdominoplasty is not a single operation. It is a family of related techniques, and your surgeon chooses among them based on where the loose skin sits and how much the abdominal wall has stretched.
- Full tummy tuck. A low incision runs from hip to hip just above the pubic area, with a second small incision around the belly button so it can be repositioned after excess skin is removed. Stretched or separated muscles are sutured together to create internal support, and liposuction can be added where needed.
- Mini tummy tuck. Only the area below the navel is treated. This suits patients in relatively good shape with good skin tone whose concern is a small pocket of loose lower skin.
- Extended tummy tuck. After significant weight loss, the incision may continue around the flanks and lower back so those areas can be tightened at the same time.
If you have a previous C-section scar, your surgeon will follow that incision rather than creating a new one, and the final scar is placed low enough to sit under most underwear and swimwear. Some patients are also candidates for GalaFLEX mesh, an absorbable scaffold that reinforces the abdominal wall while it heals.
Signs You Are Ready, and Signs to Wait
The best results come when timing is right. You are likely a strong candidate if you are in good overall health, close to your ideal weight, and bothered by loose skin or a rounded lower abdomen that diet and exercise have not changed. Our surgeons pay particular attention to fat stored high in the upper abdomen, because fat around the organs limits what surgery can achieve and raises risk.
It is usually better to wait if you are still losing weight, plan another pregnancy, or currently smoke. Pregnancy after a tummy tuck is safe, but it stretches the same muscles and skin the surgery repaired. Smokers are asked to stop well before surgery because tobacco slows healing. Patients torn between a tummy tuck alone and a combined approach may find our comparison of a mommy makeover versus a tummy tuck useful before the consultation.
Surgery Day at Our On-Site Surgical Center
Your procedure takes place in our accredited surgical facility under general anesthesia, so there is no separate hospital check-in. A tummy tuck is an outpatient procedure for most patients, although someone with complicating health factors may stay overnight with us for careful monitoring. You will go home in a compression garment that supports the healing tissue and helps the new contour settle evenly.
Because you will be groggy and sore, arrange for a responsible adult to drive you from Sarasota back to Venice and to stay with you once you are home.
A Six-Week Recovery, Planned From Venice
A tummy tuck is a significant operation, and our surgeons describe a recovery period of up to six weeks. Planning that time before surgery makes it far easier.
- The first two days. Complete rest, followed by gentle movement to keep blood flowing and lower the risk of complications. Most patients need prescription pain medication early on.
- The first several days. Short, easy walks around the house are encouraged. Longer walks can build gradually as you heal.
- Weeks one through six. You keep wearing your compression garment and return to Sarasota for follow-up visits so your surgical team can check healing and start the scar protocol.
- Six to eight weeks and beyond. Most patients wait at least six to eight weeks before strenuous exercise or high-impact activity, and only after their surgeon clears them.
Swelling fades gradually, and over roughly six months your new contour becomes easier to see. Nutrition plays a part too; our diet tips for before and after a tummy tuck are a practical place to start stocking the kitchen.
Different Training Paths, the Same Board Certification
Every tummy tuck consultation at Sarasota Plastic Surgery Center is with a board-certified plastic surgeon, and each of our four brings a different path to the operating room. Dr. Brian M. Derby completed two years of fellowship training that included cosmetic breast and body surgery. Dr. Scott J. Engel trained in aesthetic surgery at the Cleveland Clinic, where he holds an adjunct clinical faculty appointment. Dr. Michael D. Baratta completed an aesthetic surgery fellowship at HKB Cosmetic Surgery in Charlotte, North Carolina. Dr. David L. Mobley is triple board-certified and has practiced plastic surgery for more than thirty years. All four hold privileges at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.
Your consultation lasts about an hour, enough time to examine your abdomen, review your health history and decide which version of the procedure fits.
Straight Answers for Venice Patients
How far is the practice from Venice?
Our office is in Sarasota, a straightforward drive north on US-41 or I-75 for most Venice residents. Because follow-up visits happen at the practice, many Venice patients plan rides for the first week or two and drive themselves only once their surgeon says it is safe.
How do I know whether I need a mini or a full tummy tuck?
A mini tummy tuck addresses concerns below the navel only. If loose skin or muscle separation extends above the belly button, a full tummy tuck is usually the better match, and significant weight loss may call for an extended version. Your surgeon makes this call after examining you in person.
Can my surgeon use my existing C-section scar?
Yes. When you have a previous C-section scar, we follow that incision so you do not end up with a second scar on the lower abdomen.
Can I have a baby after a tummy tuck?
Pregnancy after a tummy tuck is safe, but it is not recommended because a growing pregnancy stretches the muscles and skin again. Most patients schedule surgery once they are finished having children.
Book the Consultation, Then Plan the Drive
The easiest way to start is to send our team a consultation request with a few dates that work around your Venice schedule, or call the practice and a coordinator will help you line up a time. Patients who would like a first conversation before making the trip can begin with a virtual consultation. Every result depends on your anatomy, health and healing, and your surgeon will talk you through realistic expectations before you decide.
