About PRP Hair Therapy

The thinning of hair is a major concern for a number of adults, whether it is the result of age, hormones, genetics, health conditions, or from years of over styling. Thanks to recent advances in research within the hair restoration industry, new treatments have been created to help men and women overcome this concern. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an advanced nonsurgical treatment that is showing remarkable benefits in slowing, stopping, and reversing hair loss. PRP has also shown promising outcomes in individuals with alopecia areata or thinning eyebrows. By blending a powerful solution of bioactive proteins and growth factors, PRP therapy can help strengthen the hair, resulting in thicker, longer, healthier-looking locks. Sarasota Plastic Surgery Center is pleased to offer this revolutionary hair loss treatment solution to local men and women.

Procedure Technique

A nonsurgical process, PRP therapy is generally completed within a short 60-minute office visit. The process begins by obtaining a small amount of the patient's blood and placing it in a specialized machine, which circulates the blood at high speed to separate the platelets from the rest of the components. A local anesthetic is then applied to the scalp for comfort, and the platelet-rich plasma is injected into areas that are thinning or balding. Our routine for nonsurgical management of baldness includes an initial treatment and maintenance therapies roughly every nine months to a year.

Following Treatment

There is no recovery period necessary following the PRP for hair reduction process, which carries almost no limits or constraints. In some instances, patients may develop symptoms, like discoloration, minor swelling, and mild tenderness within the treated areas, which may persist for up to 48 hours. While outcomes differ for each individual patient, aesthetic results are typically noticeable around 4 – 6 months following the first PRP treatment and can continue to improve for as much as a year after therapy. As PRP is not a permanent option for reversing hair loss, follow-up treatments are highly recommended every 12 – 18 months. It is very important to note that PRP does not grow new hair follicles in areas where balding has occurred. Rather, it is used to reverse the miniaturization of hair follicles so they will create fuller, healthier, longer hair fibers.

PRP for Hair Restoration FAQs

Combined with other treatments?
Many patients combine other treatments with PRP therapy, including topical medication applied at home, microneedling, and more. Our team will assess the scalp and level of hair loss before customizing a PRP therapy hair restoration plan. Recommendations for in-office treatments and any home products that might help combat hair loss between appointments will also be discussed.

Treatment frequency?
Most patients need at least three PRP treatments performed one month apart to see results. Each individual PRP therapy program will depend on the degree of hair loss and personal goals. Based on these factors, our team can recommend how many PRP hair restoration treatments will be needed and the scheduling frequency recommended to stimulate hair growth. For more advanced hair loss conditions, treatments may be recommended in greater numbers initially and then on an as-needed basis once the results become apparent.

How effective is it?
The outcomes of PRP therapy will depend on the severity of hair loss, the number of treatments received, and other factors. It does take time for new hair growth to become visible after the PRP stimulates the process. During the initial consultation, we will determine candidacy for the procedure and discuss realistic expectations. A continuation of PRP therapy may be needed to maintain results and limit future hair loss.

Is it comfortable?
While the serum is being prepared, a numbing serum will be applied to the scalp to help ensure treatment comfort during the PRP injections. The scalp may feel numb or tingle for a while following PRP injections, but this is temporary and should subside once the anesthetic wears off.
