What to wear to your breast augmentation consultation

A good starting point when dressing for a breast augmentation consultation is to wear something that makes you feel totally comfortable. Additionally, choosing a separate top and bottom over a dress or jumpsuit is helpful. This is your opportunity to try out different sizes and shapes of breast implants and see how they look on you. The experience is similar to clothes shopping, but you get a new ‘breast look’!

Bring tops that you don’t feel you can wear at the moment because of your shape, but you’d really like to and tops that you wear all the time – to the gym, going out, or to work. By trying a wide range of different tops on with a variety of implant sizes and shapes, you can get a very good idea of how you could look in your clothes after the procedure. Above all, enjoy it! This is a really fun appointment and your chance to spend some quality time with your plastic surgeon. It gives you and your plastic surgeon time to partner together on the best approach for reaching your aesthetic goals.

Breast Implant Types

Saline and silicone are the two most popular types of breast implants. Both have their unique benefits, which we will discuss in detail during your consultation.

Silicone

Silicone implants are the most popular option for breast augmentation, both by surgeons and patients. They are known for creating a highly natural look and feel, especially in thin patients with little natural breast tissue. Silicone implants are pre-filled with silicone gel and require a larger incision than saline implants.

Saline

Saline breast implants are a good option for younger women that desire breast augmentation. Currently, FDA approval for silicone implants is only available for women aged 22+, unless there is a specific anatomical reason why a silicone implant is needed. Saline implants allow for a smaller incision and are easier to remove. Since they are filled with medical-grade saline, they can have a firm feel.

Breast Implant Profile

Breast implants come in a variety of profiles. Patients select implants based on the extent of the breasts’ projection and how wide the implant will be on the chest wall in relation to the base width. Since silicone implants are already pre-filled, the standard profiles come in low, moderate, high, and extra high. However, saline implants are inserted and then filled with saline solution until they meet the patient’s preferred profile. Choosing the right profile can sometimes be difficult, and it is up to a skilled plastic surgeon to help guide the patient accordingly. At Sarasota Plastic Surgery Center, we often use Vectra 3-D, which allows the use of 3-dimensional images of the patient to show actual changes with different implants. This method is highly beneficial in making this all-important decision.

Many of our patients ask about the safety of silicone breast implants. Today’s silicone implants are much more advanced than the silicone implants used decades ago. Ruptures are rare, but when they do occur, newer implant types feature a durable shell that will encase the silicone gel, preventing it from entering the body. Whether you choose saline or silicone for your procedure, we are confident in the safety and efficacy of the breast implants that we use at our practice.

Since breast augmentation is highly customized, it is impossible to provide a quote for this procedure without meeting for a consultation first. You’ll receive detailed pricing information during your first meeting with us, including details about our payment and financing options.

Implant Placement

The two most common placements are on top of the chest muscle or under it. When the implant is placed below the muscle, a pocket is created under the pectoralis major muscle. Many surgeons now prefer the submuscular approach (behind the muscle). Placing the implant behind the muscle also provides a natural look and provides the implant with the long-term support it needs to stay in position. Scientific studies also indicate less chance of developing capsular contracture (hardening) of the implants in the submuscular position.

Augmentation without Implants

Breast implants aren’t the only option for augmenting the breasts. We also offer natural breast augmentation, an alternative to breast implants that uses a patient’s own fat to add shape and volume to the breasts. This option is ideal for patients that desire fuller breasts but do not want an artificial implant. During a fat transfer procedure, fat is extracted using liposuction, purified and concentrated, and injected into the breasts. We can also use fat transfer to improve the results from previous breast augmentation or breast reconstruction procedures.

What to Expect During and After Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure that lasts about an hour. It is performed using general anesthesia in our accredited surgical facility. Patients must limit all activities within 48 hours after surgery. There will be mild bruising and swelling, and patients will need to wear a support bra to help in healing. It is normal to feel tightness around the chest area as the skin adjusts to the breast’s new shape. Most patients can resume normal activities within 7 days but should avoid exercise for 3 weeks. It takes approximately 3 – 6 months for the breasts to look, feel, and function regularly regarding softness, sensation, and final implant position.

Breast implants do not alleviate breast sagging. If you have sagging or drooping breasts, you may benefit from a breast lift with your augmentation procedure. A breast lift and breast augmentation can be performed simultaneously during a single trip to the operating room. Many women opt for a breast lift with implants as part of a mommy makeover after pregnancy.

Modern breast implants are exceptionally durable and have an outstanding safety profile. Breast implants can last 15 years or longer. If your implants show no signs of damage or defect, replacement may not necessary. Periodic checks of your implants, both by your plastic surgeon and using MRI technology, will ensure your implants are still intact years after your surgery.

For most patients, it takes about 8-12 weeks for the breasts to feel as soft and natural as they did before their breast surgery. Abnormal nipple sensation is typical too. They can be extra sensitive or less sensitive, but they typically resolve themselves in a few months.

Saline implants are filled with saline solution during the surgery, which allows your surgeon to make more precise adjustments. Saline implants can be placed in the pocket through a small sub-areolar incision, which allows for the creation of a full cleavage. If saline implants rupture, your body naturally absorbs and processes the saline liquid with virtually no risk or harm. Your surgeon will gladly discuss how saline implants can benefit you during your consultation.

You can return to light work after 3-4 days and resume light exercising in the gym after two weeks, depending on where you are in the healing process. Full activity without limitation is permitted after one month from surgery.

Since breast augmentation is highly customized, it is impossible to provide a quote for this procedure without meeting for a consultation first. You’ll receive detailed pricing information during your first meeting with us, including details about our payment and financing options.

Many women go on to successfully breastfeed after breast augmentation. If you’re planning future pregnancies and hope to breastfeed, let your surgeon know before surgery as some implant placement options and incision types are more conducive to future breastfeeding success.
