Hand Rejuvenation

HAND REJUVENATION in Sarasota

Through the natural aging process, the hands can lose volume and elasticity. This results in a thinner, bony appearance with the addition of fine lines and wrinkles. At Sarasota Plastic Surgery Center, our skilled plastic surgeons offer hand rejuvenation procedures through the use of volume replacement with either fat grafting or injectable fillers. These procedures can also be combined with skin rejuvenating treatments to address age and sunspots. With both fat transfer and injectable fillers, volume is restored to the hands to reduce the appearance of skin laxity and wrinkles that occur as we age. TYPES OF HAND REJUVENATION

Injectable Fillers

Injectable fillers can be used to replace the lost volume in the back of the hand and decrease the visibility of the veins and tendons. At our practice, Radiesse® is the most commonly used filler to effectively rejuvenate the hands and restore fullness. During your consultation, your Sarasota plastic surgeon will determine the best filler to achieve your desired results.

Injectable Fat Transfer

A fat transfer is an excellent option to replace the lost volume in the back of the hand. The fat is taken by liposuction from an area of the body, typically the abdomen or waist, before processed and transferred directly into the hand via a sterile syringe. The fat is a living filler so it has the potential for lasting longer than commercial injectable fillers. Further, it is the most natural product as you are the source.

Hand Rejuvenation: What to Expect

Hand rejuvenation uses a combination of different procedures including injectable fillers and fat transfer. The procedures are customized to your individual needs during your initial consultation at our Sarasota facility.

A hand rejuvenation treatment is considered an outpatient procedure. Many patients are able to return to their usual activities immediately, but fat transfer patients should avoid strenuous exercise for 7 – 10 days to allow for proper healing. Redness, swelling, bruising, and/or itching are normal symptoms but these should subside in a few days. Any discomfort can be eased with pain medication, and a cold compress can help reduce swelling. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your recovery process, please call our office.

Injectable Fillers

A numbing cream is first applied to the skin and the injectable filler is then injected into the back of your hand and fingers. Typically, two syringes of product are required for each hand. The entire treatment only takes about ten minutes to complete.

Fat Transfer

With a fat transfer, fat is first removed via liposuction from the abdomen, hips, or flanks and is then purified. The harvesting portion may be done under local anesthesia or twilight sedation. Once the fat is processed, it is injected into the back of the hand through a 2mm incision at the base of the wrist.

FAQs About Sarasota, FL, hand rejuvenation

The cost of a hand rejuvenation depends on the type of method used for your specific condition. The price of injectable fillers and fat transfer vary. Every patient has a unique treatment plan and can combine several of these procedures to attain the results they desire. An estimated figure can be discussed during your initial consultation.

Although a hand rejuvenation treatment can provide stunning results and even help reverse the signs of aging, it will not stop the aging process. Multiple treatments may be necessary to maintain your results. In general, injectable filler can last anywhere from 1 – 3 years, and a fat transfer may last for several years.

The most significant benefit of receiving an injectable fat transfer is that it’s your own natural product. It is part of you and when it is transferred to its new location, it develops a blood supply which allows it to live and last for years. The second most significant benefit is that you have an unlimited supply since you are the donor. Fat is charged by the procedure and not by the syringe. An unlimited fat donor supply implies that your procedure is significantly more cost effective.

The fat that is transferred is made up of living cells. This explains why fat can last for several years. Fat is the longest-lasting method for volume replacement. However, just like the natural body fat in the face, the fat cells will shrink with age and also be affected by gravity. Many patients will elect to have a second fat transfer procedure in 3 – 5 years.

Most patients only need about 1 – 2 tablespoons of fat harvested from another area of their body to restore the youthful appearance of their hands. The entire process typically takes about 30 minutes.
