As we age, we all naturally develop “dynamic” wrinkles caused by repeated movements. Every smile and every frown causes facial lines, which eventually begin to linger even after the expression fades away. BOTOX Cosmetic has become extremely popular as a quick, simple, and affordable way to erase wrinkles around the eyes and brows. The experienced professionals at our Sarasota cosmetic surgery practice and MedSpa use BOTOX injections to smooth away those lines. BOTOX is considered an outstanding nonsurgical rejuvenation treatment that refresh patients’ faces with little to no downtime.
BOTOX Cosmetic is made up of a substance called onabotulinumtoxinA, which was first approved by the FDA in 2002 to treat glabellar lines – those vertical frown lines between the brows. Since its approval, BOTOX Cosmetic has steadily risen to be the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment in the U.S. It works by blocking nerve impulses to the muscles that cause wrinkles when we make an expression. Instead of flexing and forming wrinkles, the muscles and skin stay relaxed. The team at our on-site MedSpa use this safe, effective product to treat frown lines, brow creases, and crow’s feet, as well as laugh lines around the mouth.
Tiny doses of BOTOX are injected into the skin where wrinkles are noticeable. It is normally done in the doctor’s office and the procedure can last from 15 to 30 minutes. The number of injections and dose amounts administered varies by patient depending on the severity of wrinkles. Patients are first marked with ink prior to the injection so that the practitioner can accurately inject the areas in need of wrinkle softening. This procedure does not create any discomfort other than a normal prick that comes with a small needle. A numbing cream may be applied to help with any discomfort. Patients will be able to go home right after treatment with no downtime from their normal routine.
"After a very questionable experience at Faces on Main, I decided that a cosmetic surgeon was the only person I was going to be able to trust. I recently started getting Botox done and found many good reviews for Dr. Scott Engel at Sarasota Plastic Surgery Center. Dr. Engel was super. Interestingly enough, he wanted to discuss the date of my last mammogram, as a surgeon who does breast reconstruction following cancer it certainly makes sense. He gave me to understand that I would need to get a mammogram before I was to get more Botox - I believe I was being told that if I could find funds for Botox then I could certainly find the $35 for a mammogram. He didn't tell me where to go or who to see, just the direction that it needed to be done before our next meeting. I find this incredibly impressive. We then went on to discuss my Botox and what non-surgical procedures I may be interested in over the coming years. I told him I was looking for one doctor who understood what I wanted and what I didn't, and who would help guide me through that; a doctor with whom I could develop a trusting relationship. I do believe I've found him. He did my crow's feet and glabellar lines and did an amazing job. It took over four months to start wearing off. The shots - well, most of them - I didn't even feel. No slight swelling and I was even able to go out that evening without worrying about bruising or swelling. This place gets a five star rating from me. I hope Dr. Engel and I have a long, sensible relationship punctuated by timely mammograms."- D.S. / Yelp / Oct 29, 2012
"Dr. Engel has done my Botox for years and the results have always been excellent. He is very professional and caring. Bridgette the PA is also excellent for Botox injections and light lasers for brown spots and veins. I have had great experiences with her also. Everything about Sarasota Plastic Surgery seems first class."- D.M. / Yelp / Mar 30, 2015
"He has done my Botox for many years. His reputation is excellent and he is known for taking time with patients and listening to their concerns. Several of my friends have had surgery by him and they are extremely happy with their results. I wouldn't think of going to anyone else"- M.N. / Vitals / Feb 14, 2014
"Will Continue to Do It... Juvederm and Botox Make Me Look and Feel Younger - I have had juvederm and botox done for years now and I love it. I bruise easy so that is the only bummer. I don't want to go around looking like someone punched me but that is the price we pay!I had juvederm in my lips and it has lasted a long time. I usually go every six months for botox. It is true...the longer you use it, the less you need it!"- 1. / RealSelf / Apr 12, 2010
"I did not actually have anything done here, I was just inquiring about Botox - they charge per AREA, and the first AREA is $250 - one area is the area between the eye brows, another is forehead, and another is crow's feet.... they make no distinction based on the number of units you need - so if you are in your 30s or 40s, you are paying as much as someone in their 60s - that just seems crazy to me.... moving on to another place to get this done..."- G.M. / Yelp / Nov 13, 2015
What to Expect
After treatment, mild swelling and bruising may appear on the injection spots. Patients are advised to limit exercise and to sleep in an upright position the same night as the treatment. The redness and swelling will only last for a few hours, but some patients may experience bruising for several days. There are bruising medications, such as Arnica, that patients can take a week prior to treatment to help minimize bruising. The results from a BOTOX treatment take 5-7 days to appear. When they do, the face will look smoother and brighter, and patients will feel rejuvenated by their fresh appearance.
How Safe Is It?
When administered properly, BOTOX rarely causes any complications. With that said, it is still very important to find someone who has experience in handling this medication. Too much of the product can cause an undesirable outcome. A skilled practitioner will use just enough of the medication to effectively freeze the facial muscles that cause wrinkles while leaving nearby muscles unaffected. BOTOX is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments on the market today. It is safe and effective, and approved by the FDA. BOTOX is also used to treat other medical conditions such as squints, excessive sweating, uncontrollable blinking and migraines.
There is an ongoing trend where people who wish to have BOTOX treatments will gather together and administer the BOTOX doses themselves called ‘BOTOX cocktail parties’. This is very risky. BOTOX, when administered incorrectly, may paralyze unintended muscles that can result in an abnormal facial appearance. BOTOX treatments should be done in a medical setting with an experienced, skilled injector.
Same As BOTOX?
In recent years, BOTOX has seen some competition as other drugs have been approved by the FDA and introduced to the aesthetic market. Dysport and Xeomin are muscle relaxers similar to BOTOX. Each has its specific trending function that can be addressed during the initial consultation. Sometimes, a combination of the drugs is used to treat various areas. For example, BOTOX for frown lines, and Dysport for crow’s feet.
Are Fillers Better?
BOTOX and fillers are both popular cosmetic treatments with the ability to decrease wrinkles and smoothen facial areas. The difference with each is the way the substances function to create the rejuvenating effect. Injectable fillers add volume under the skin to fill hollow areas and decrease the appearance of wrinkles on the surface. BOTOX, on the other hand, relaxes the muscles underneath the skin so that the muscles cannot contract, allowing a softer effect on the surface. It is very common for patients to undergo treatment using both a muscle relaxer and an injectable filler to attain optimal results.
Today, practitioners are treating patients of all ages with BOTOX. For some individuals, for example those as young as 30, BOTOX is considered a preventative way to prevent facial wrinkles. For others (i.e. 40 years old and older), it is a rejuvenation effort to smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Older individuals (55 and up) will still receive great benefit from having BOTOX injections, but for some, a facelift technique might be a better option to consider.
How Long Does It Last?
A BOTOX injection will last between 3-4 months. The treatment can be repeated every quarter and for most patients who receive this treatment, they usually come back for more. BOTOX is an effective, easy and safe way to minimize the appearance of facial wrinkles. Patients consider it a part of their normal beauty routine.
