A weak or recessive chin can be improved with a chin implant. Our Sarasota, FL plastic surgery center offers chin augmentation, which is a cosmetic procedure that uses an implant to enhance the contours of the chin while strengthening the jaw line. It is a common procedure for both men and women and results in a natural and improved appearance. Chin augmentation surgery can be performed to supplement a nose procedure or to balance and improve the contours of the cheeks, or other area on the face. Chin implants are generally inserted within a chin pocket that is created along the lower border of the jaw to strengthen its features. Synthetic implants are typically made of a solid silicone material, and come in different sizes and shapes that can be matched to the patient’s aesthetic goals and personal preferences.
During chin augmentation, the implant is positioned over the bone below the lips. A pocket is created, which will hold the prosthesis in place. Sometimes the bone is shaved to create a groove for the implant. Incisions are commonly placed in two areas that can easily conceal scars – on the underside of the chin or inside the lip, just between where the lower lip meets the gum. The results after this procedure are almost always positive for patients. An experience surgeon will create subtle results, yet dramatic enough to make a significant improvement to a person’s self esteem.
"This Specific Doctor! - I view the choice for a plastic surgeon in 3 areas. Reputation; manner; results. I was walking in with a face that had been treated with Botox in such a way that, to me, I looked grotesque. I could smile on one side and the other side of my mouth was paralyzed by the fact that Botox took effect on one side but not on the other. The Botox had been administered by another doctor in another state. To say I was nervous about doing anything else at all was an understatement. I remember Dr. Graham saying to me, when I was considering a lower-priced dermatologist to address my face, "Think about it; it's your face." Good words. I did think about it and I did proceed with Dr. Graham. I had known numerous people who had seen him for successful surgeries, and many of them could afford to go to any doctor in the world. They chose Dr. Graham. He took the time with me, explained, reassured and scheduled me in a time frame for which I could be in town. He was very well recommended and has an unusually admirable reputation. That is what initially got me there. His manner was kind and sweet yet also had a touch of confidence and conviction that he could help me that sort of made me pay special attention to the level of expertise and care I was about to receive. That brings us to the results. No one but a few close friends know I had this surgery. Yet everyone says how great I look, that life must be treating me well, that I seem so happy and content these days. Dr. Graham created the perfect look with a gentle touch, with not too much but very much enough for significant improvement and for rolling back the clock. I am 64. Most people guess that I'm in my early to mid-40's. Maybe that's just being polite but the fact that these compliments come from such diverse individuals and on the heels of this surgery must be more than coincidental.I must compliment, too, the staff at Sarasota Plastic Surgery Center. Helpful, polite, kind, caring, reassuring....they are extremely supportive and no question seems to mundane or silly for them to answer. They are prompt at returning a phone call and bend over backwards to make scheduling work. The office feels good. It is comfortable, tasteful, clean, nurturing, peaceful.I would go to Dr. Braun Graham again. Plastic surgery is not inexpensive but we don't get another body to live in. Not only would I recommend his work to others, I would return to his care myself knowing I was in the best hands possible. I say this, too, because I have had previous procedures and while I have interacted with some very good physicians and surgeons, I believe Dr. Graham is at the very top of the list in the qualities I value."- F. / RealSelf / Nov 16, 2016
"Extremely satisfied - From the first visit to last, I'm extremely pleased with all the staff, not only their professionalism in handling everyday issues but their knowledge and expertise answering all my questions. Dr. Mobley never seemed to tire of my repeated questions and the results of my laser resurfacing, fat transfer, blepharoplasty and face lift are amazing. Every day there was a noticeable, positive..."- L. / RealSelf / Oct 14, 2017

Chin implant surgery may use either a local anesthesia or general anesthesia depending on the surgical case. The procedure is performed in a surgical facility. It may last up to 2 hours. A liquid diet is usually recommended in the first 3 days to avoid any pressure around the chin as the sutures are sensitive until healed. The patient is allowed only light activities until the second week. There will be numbness on the area surrounding the implant. While this is normal, the sensation will gradually improve as weeks pass. As with any implant surgery, it generally takes several months for the implant to settle into position and create a final outcome that is soft, natural and normal in feeling.
Chin Augmentation FAQs
Chin augmentation is designed to emphasize the jaw line and create a balanced overall facial appearance. If there are excess fat deposits under the chin, which creates an impression of a double chin, liposuction may be performed. Before any cosmetic surgery, it is advised that the patient is close or already at their goal weight so it doesn’t compromise the positive results of surgery. Sometimes, liposuction is sufficient as it already defines the chin without ever needing an implant.
Yes. With the implant and surrounding tissues adjusting to its new position, there will be a loss of sensation around the chin area and the skin around it will feel tighter than usual. This is an expected reaction post-surgery and shouldn’t be a cause of anxiety. Eventually, sensitivity will return to normal, but it may take several months before the patient can regain all sensation.
The incisions made during a chin augmentation procedure are placed inconspicuously within the inside of the lip or under the chin, therefore, there is limited to no scarring that occurs with this procedure.
