Labiaplasty (also called labial rejuvenation, labia reduction, or labioplasty) is a procedure which recontours or reduces the size of the labia minora. Enlarged or uneven labia minora can occur naturally with hormonal changes, or after stretching from multiple childbirths or sexual intercourse. This can cause difficulty with hygiene, irritation, and discomfort. Women who visit our Sarasota plastic sugery center for labia reduction often complain of discomfort while performing activities such as biking, jogging, or sexual intercourse. Fortunately, with a simple outpatient procedure, women can regain their confidence and reduce their discomfort. While this is a personal complaint that can be difficult to discuss, when you visit us for labiaplasty the physicians and staff at Sarasota Plastic Surgery Center will provide a very professional and private consultation to address your concerns.
Women who are considering labiaplasty should consult with a qualified cosmetic surgeon. Skilled surgeons use aesthetic reshaping techniques so that the labia are not only reduced in size, but also the nerves are protected in the process so that sexual feeling is not compromised. A surgeon with experience will preserve the natural color and contour and create a result that looks visually appealing with minimal to no scarring.
Labiaplasty Surgical Process
The most common approach surgeons take to perform labiaplasty is to reshape the inner folds of the labia. The surgeon will carefully work to reshape and reconstruct the labia so that they meet the patient’s aesthetic goals. Dissolvable sutures are used to close the incision. Some patients may also be concerned about the size of the labia majora, or outer folds of skin. This can be improved with an additional surgical incision or may involve fat grafting to restore lost volume.

This is my second procedure with him. "Age 40; 3 Kids and Lots of Extra Skin in the Tummy Region - Sarasota, FL - To anyone out there thinking about getting a tummy tuck, Dr. Derby is /was so attentive. He truly put me at ease by answering every single question that I had and took as much time as needed to make me feel comfortable about the procedure even after the surgery was completed. Not only is he extremely educated in the area of abdominoplasty, but his bed side manner is amazing. He truly showed concern for me as his patient and made me feel so comfortable. I would recommend him to anyone looking to have cosmetic surgery done. - - I'm a mother of 3 very large baby boys who caused my stomach to become covered in stretch marks and sagging skin. I hated the way I looked in a bikini or even just showing my stomach in general! I had the abdominoplasty surgery done on March 9th of 2016. Excited but nervous, I arrived to the surgery center where I met with my nurses (amazing) and Dr. Derby. They were prompt and so professional. When I woke up, to my surprise, I really wasn't in as much pain as I had expected. I just had a lot of discomfort. I spent that night in the rehab center and went back to see Dr. Derby the next morning. After about two weeks I was able to start getting up and move around (with pain meds) to shower on my own. I returned to work (system admin) after 3 weeks and was a little uncomfortable but able to do normal activities of my job. After the 4 month mark I could start to see the swelling go down and also started to feel more like myself again when moving. I am now 6 month post-surgery and look (not to toot my own horn) amazing! I so love to show off my tummy in a bikini and even went down in a size. YAY!! For me, it was so worth it but it took the right team and surgeon! I would do it all over again in a heartbeat! So, here is a BIG Thank You to Dr. Derby and staff for your amazing skills and incredible bedside manner. I truly appreciate the way you took care of me during the surgery and as you continue to do so as your patient."- A. / RealSelf / Jul 25, 2016
Labiaplasty typically takes between 1-2 hours to complete, depending on how complex the surgical case is. It is performed under general anesthesia at our Sarasota surgical facility and does not require an overnight stay. Women who undergo labia rejuvenation will need to avoid any activity that may cause swelling and bleeding, such as exercise, sexual activity, douching, and the use of tampons. These activities can be resumed slowly around 4-6 weeks post-op. Women find that the results of this procedure look so natural that their self-confidence and self-image are improved drastically.
How to Choose a Doctor?
An experienced surgeon will remove excess tissue and consider the aesthetics as well. This ensures that scarring is minimal, and that color, contour and symmetry looks and feels natural.
Does it Cause Insensitivity?
As with any surgery, there may be numbness in the vaginal area after the procedure is completed. This is temporary as the skin and vaginal lips heal. In regards to sensitivity, it is important to understand that labia rejuvenation affects, for the most part, the vaginal lips only. Sensitivity is served by the clitoris. A skilled cosmetic surgeon that specializes in labiaplasty will work around this area so that a loss of sensitivity does not occur.
Does it Affect Intercourse?
Labiaplasty, when performed by a skilled surgeon, will only improve sexual intercourse. In many cases, this is because the excess skin and tissue that may have gotten in the way during sex before will now be removed. The clitoral region will be protected and the sensory nerves preserved so that sexual intercourse is not impacted in a negative way.
Before or After Pregnancy?
In most cases, it is recommended that women wait to have labia rejuvenation until after all pregnancies are complete. However, if having enlarged labia is bothersome and causes physical symptoms and emotional hardship, then this surgery can most definitely be performed before a planned pregnancy. If the results of the surgery are compromised due to a post-surgical pregnancy, a second surgery can be discussed.
